“Elisha’s Encounter with Children” (4)
“…and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died.” II Kings 4:20b
In this experience, Elisha had some earlier communication with this family. The great woman of Shunem had recognized he was a man of God and the Lord used him to pray that she have a son. It came true and then tragedy of tragedies, the lad dies. Thus, we have a parent who realizes her child is already lost, gone, dead.
One great lesson in this story is this family’s interest in and care for the man of God, Elisha. Over thirty-five times in these few chapters is the moniker used, “man of God.” You may know men of influence or a man of means, but, how valuable is an association with a real man of God! Elisha brought hope and light into this childless family and then when the light was extinguished and hope forsaken, he was there for the family. This was a man of God who believed God worked miracles. He was touched by human needs and had a visible holiness (vs. 9). He was not just a man’s man, but God’s man!
As a parent, if you have arrived at a brick wall of a belligerent, back-slidden boy or girl, get yourself and them to a man of God. Elisha stretched himself over this child three times and brought him back to life (vss. 33-35). A good place to start would be to get faithful to church Sunday morning, Sunday night and the mid-week service. I’m not talking about just a “run-of-the-mill” minister. I’m saying get them to a man that God knows and he knows God. — Dr. Tim Green
I cannot stress enough the importance of finding and being faithful to God through a KJV Bible teaching preaching church and true man of God. They are getting fewer by the day, but they are still out there. Attending the new-fangled ear-tickling churches who put on the same show or a “contemporary version” on a Sunday morning or Saturday night is not a true Bible teaching church. These “feel good” churches who use the corrupt versions of God’s Word teach corrupt doctrine that helps sinners stay comfortable in their sin. If you visit a church and the Man of God preaches/teaches straight from God’s incorrupt KJV Bible, you will definitely be convicted in your Spirit. Stay there! Those men of God have no problem saying it like it is and counseling from God’s Word, instead of joining us in making excuses for our children’s behaviour. If you are attending a church once a week or less just for a feel good fix, you are not receiving true Godly teaching, run from it! So-called pastors of those churches will be held accountable by God, and so will we if we support them.
